Who was Sir Harry Oakes? Sir Harry Oakes, 1st Baronet (December 23, 1874 Sangerville, Maine – July 7, 1943 Nassau, Bahamas) was an American-born British gold-mine owner, entrepreneur, investor and philanthropist. He earned his fortune in Canada and moved to the Bahamas for tax purposes.
He was murdered in 1943 under notorious circumstances in the Bahamas. The circumstances surrounding and the cause of his death have never been entirely determined, and have been the subject of several books and at least two films. Designed as an amphitheater, Oakes Garden Theatre was opened in September 1937. Oakes, a member of the Niagara Parks Commission donated the land at the foot of Clifton Hill and Niagara Parkway to the commission in 1936. The property had formerly been the site of the Clifton Hotel, which had been destroyed by fire on December 31, 1932.
